Take your time! Find a denomination that fits your mind set and spiritual needs. Becoming a Buddhist and becoming a Buddhist who is a member of a temple are different. One becomes a Buddhists by saying, with pure intent, "I go to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha for guidance" three times. That person then searches to learn the teachings of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni.
Being a Buddhist who is a member of a temple means that you are part of an organization of people who financially, physically and joyfully support the continuance of a temple. Then, you can become part of a national and then international Sangha, if you wish. There are temple presidents and board members selected, district offices to hold, participation in the national council, and simple things like "clean-up day" when we all come together and have a pot luck lunch afterward. There are temple and national news sent out to members. Being a member is a commitment to the future of the temple! |
