Interested in learning taiko? We teach beginners too!

For centuries, Taiko (Japanese Drumming) has been an extremely important part of Japan's cultural temple heritage. A powerful force in Buddhist temples, it was used during services, much like the ringing of the bell before service time. Only recently, about the past 50 years or so, has taiko been used for entertainment purposes. The philosophy behind this new Dharma entertainment is simple: a mixture of beautiful form, rhythm, power, and the Dharma. It's quite unlike anything you have ever seen before and makes for an interesting time while still preserving the beauty and history of one of Japan's oldest art forms.

Koru Taiko is a small group only three years old. The name Koru means "the illustrious sound of Amida Buddha reverberating throughout the universe." This name was given to the group by Rev. Sensho Inouye of Fowler Buddhist Temple. This group's mission is to combine traditional temple taiko with new experimental fusion ideas. The result is a combination of thunderous sounds with complicated rythmic patterns while maintaining the essence and spirit of the past.
